Bayesian regression analysis with R (dr. Natalia Levshina, Leipzig University)
 
Thanks to the development of powerful computers, Bayesian methods are playing an increasingly important role in statistical analysis. This practically oriented workshop shows how one can fit generalized linear models within the Bayesian framework. It includes a general introduction to the fundamental concepts of Bayesian inference and offers case studies using some popular R packages. A special focus will be on diagnostic tools and visualization methods. 
 
Prerequisites: a basic knowledge of R and familiarity with the main statistical principles. 

 

Introduction to ELAN (dr. Bert Oben, University College Leuven Limburg & Liege University)

This will be a hands-on workshop that provides an introduction to the functionality and possibilities of the annotation tool ELAN. The workshop will take place in a computer room to allow course participants to get an actual feel of ELAN. Starting from sample video data, we will learn how to manage different types of media files, how to speed up the tedious job of transcribing and annotating audio and video data, how to use ELAN as a corpus query tool, and how to export data for further analysis (in fore example Praat or for statistical analysis). This workshop is aimed at participants that have little or no previous experience in working with ELAN.

 

Using eye-tracking technology in linguistic research (Paulina Burczynska, SMI Vision & Univerity of Manchester)

The application of eye tracking as a methodological paradigm in the linguistic research enables researchers to accurately assess linguistic complexity and cognitive processes in language processing and development. The purpose of the workshop is to provide attendees with a set of guidelines on how to setup a study with remote, mobile and high-performance eye tracking paradigms in linguistics research. We will learn what parameters we should pay particular attention to when designing a study and how advanced eye tracking statistics – from fixation-based metrics, pupillometry to saccade- and microsaccade-based measures in combination with other sensors (e.g., EEG, GSR) can enhance and strengthen findings. The theoretical part of the workshop will intersect with hands-on session on the eye tracking devices and with several case studies to explain the application of eye tracking technology and metrics in the research context of reading studies, spoken language, cognitive and developmental linguistics.
